WireReady shortcut disappears from Win7 desktop

Q: It has happened on a couple of windows 7 workstations where the wireready shortcut has disappeared from the desktop. From some research it seems like this is a bug in windows 7 which removes "broken" shortcuts. Have you run into this and determined a workaround?

A: An easy way to get around this would be to have each desktop shortcut be a shortcut to a batch file that is on the c: drive. If the current shortcut to WireReady is "w:\wire\wr_win.exe /u news5" where w: is the server, then create a batch file on the c: drive The batch file would be:
w:
cd\wire
wr_win.exe /u news5

Since the desktop shortcut is then to a local file, Windows will not delete it.
